Will Nvidia RTX 4090 be more powerful than RTX 3090?

Will Nvidia RTX 4090 be more powerful than RTX 3090? The simple answer is yes. The Nvidia RTX 4090 is expected to be 2x faster than the Nvidia RTX 3090. According to Kopite7kimi, who is a renowned leaker, the RTX 4090 will be speedier than its predecessor. Nvidia’s upcoming GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card will reportedly offer twice the performance of its immediate predecessor, the RTX 3090.

Rumors also suggest that it will be priced at a whopping $1,899, which would be a significant markup over the RTX 3090, which has an MSRP of $1,499. That said, third-party designs from ASUS, EVGA, and others will likely be significantly more expensive than the reference designs and should comfortably go past the $2,000 mark. For reference, third-party RTX 3090 cards already come in at over $2,000 thanks to the continuing GPU shortage, although recent reports suggest that graphics card prices are finally coming down to more reasonable levels, even selling at a discount in some cases.

In a tweet, prolific tipster Kopite7kimi reiterated earlier rumors that Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 4090 will offer twice the performance of the RTX 3090 graphics card. They also shared an updated set of specifications for the forthcoming GPU, revealing that it will ship with only 126 streaming multiprocessors (SMs) enabled. The number is significantly lower than the 140-odd that was expected previously. The tweet also suggested that the card will come with 16,128 CUDA cores, 24GB of GDDR6X memory clocked at 21 Gbps, and 450 watts of TDP. The card was earlier expected to come with a 600W TDP.

RTX 4090 Ti Could Be Even More Powerful

It is worth noting that even with the fewer SMs and lower-than-expected power requirement, the tipster still expects the upcoming card to offer twice the 3D acceleration performance of its predecessor. That bodes well for the possible RTX 4090 Ti, which should come with more cores and a higher TDP, resulting in even faster performance.

It’s not immediately clear how many RTX 4000-series cards Nvidia will launch this year, but rumors suggest that the lineup could include the RTX 4090, RTX 4080, and RTX 4070. If earlier generations are anything to go by, the company will also launch the RTX 4060 and the RTX 4050 at some stage, but probably not this year. Either way, the specifications shared by the tipster are still rumors at this stage and, as such, should be taken with a pinch of salt unless confirmed by Nvidia.
