Learn how to turn off your video camera during a zoom call. Zoom is a video conferencing app, geared towards business usage. It was founded in 2011 by Eric Yuan, and launched in January 2013.
While on a Zoom call, you may want to turn off your webcam’s video and mute the audio from your microphone for a variety of reasons.

Joining a Zoom call with your camera and microphone on is pretty much a given whether you’re using a computer or a smartphone. If you aren’t ready for the meeting or you need to take a break, shutting off the camera is a good idea.
You can easily turn off or disable the zoom camera on any platform. However, note that for Windows users, the option is under the Settings menu. On Mac, the option to disable the camera is under the Preferences menu.
For those using smartphones – iOS or Android, use the following path to disable your camera during a zoom call:
- Launch the Zoom app.
- Tap on the Settings button.
- Select Meetings/Meeting.
- Toggle the Always Turn Off My Video option to on.
When you want to enable your camera again, you can tap the camera icon on your meeting screen. The same thing applies for muting/unmuting the microphone.
Turn Off Your Video Camera on Zoom Before Joining a Meeting
To disable your video camera before starting a meeting on Zoom:
- Open the Zoom client on your computer.
- Click the down-facing arrow beside the ‘New Meeting’ button.
- Un-check the “Start with video” option.
The meeting icon will now show a diagonal line through it, meaning that the video has been turned off by default for meetings you start from now onwards.
Turn Off Your Video Camera on Zoom While Joining a Meeting
If you want to join someone’s Zoom meeting without showing your video to others:
- Open Zoom and tap the ‘Join’ button.
- Enter your Meeting ID and Name.
- Before clicking on Join, check “Turn off my video.”
Turn Off Your Video Camera During a Zoom Meeting
Want to take a break during the meeting? Here’s how you can easily turn off your video camera during a zoom call:
- While in the meeting, hover your mouse over the app for options to appear on the screen.
- Click the ‘Stop Video’ button on the bottom left corner.
- You can further disable your audio by using the ‘Mute’ button next to it.
How to Make Your Microphone and Video Off by Default
To choose whether Zoom automatically activates your webcam and microphone when joining a meeting, you can go into Zoom’s settings window.
To find it, click your profile icon at the top right corner of the main Zoom window and click “Settings.”
To automatically turn off your webcam video when joining a Zoom call, click the “Video” option at the left side of the Settings window.
Activate the “Turn off my video when joining a meeting” checkbox to the right of Meetings.
To automatically mute your microphone’s audio when you join a Zoom call, click the “Audio” option at the left side of the window.
Activate the “Mute my microphone when joining a meeting” option.
You can still choose to enable your video and audio at any point in the meeting by clicking the buttons or using the appropriate keyboard shortcuts.
